The Mypekan - Race Information

Who (and what) are the Mypekan?

Race picture

The Mypekan are tall, hairless, green-skinned and humanoid creatures from the outer reaches of the Zerbera Galaxy. One could say they look like green-skinned, hairless humans, and this would actually be right. It is also to say that they have no visible ears, but who cares?

    Their origin

162,242 lightyears away from the Echo Cluster, there is a small system in the outer arms of the Zerbera galaxy called "Zraah" with a yellow sun surrounded by thirteen planets. Of these thirteen planets, three have intelligent life forms on it. These are Zraah V, Zraah IX and Zraah X.

    Their history

For a very long time, the Mypekan were a rather primitive race that had neither space-travelling nor plans for that. Approximately 800 standard years ago, they rapidly developed to a very high technology. In about 200 years, they were able to build a starbase and some small ships and probes. They sent out about 250 probes in different directions, and colonized Zraah X, their uninhabited neighbour planet. About 300 years ago, they had a big fleet of approximately 250 warships of all types and about 100 freighters. They sent them out to the systems the probes sent info about, colonized all habitable planets and destroyed the other planets' surface, killing all life for a long time. Meanwhile their empire covers about 13,000 planets in 1,500 different systems.

Whilst conquering new space systems, transmissions of other probes that were sent from the Echo Cluster reached the Empire on Zraah IX. The 14th and 44th war fleet started their way to the outer reaches of the Echo Cluster, followed by ten fully loaded large freighters.

When they arrived at terangui after 32 years of hyperspace travel and colonized the planet, the Mypekan interference in the Echo Cluster had begun...

The Mypekan interference in the Echo Cluster

Starting from terangui, the Mypekan colonized 17 planets 300 LY around terangui and built a base on Bellmont. Few months later, the base received an incomplete radio transmission from an unknown starship. The transmission was coded, and the Mypekan were unable to decode it properly, but they knew that there must have been someone or something out there. Though this was not their first encounter with an alien race, they were a bit frightened because the probes did not detect any ship travel in that area, and the highly advanced coding indicated a high tech level. As they only had a total of sixteen warships in that area, they requested reinforcements from their homeworld, but they knew that it would take a long time for them to arrive. So they decided to hide themselfes and wait for the other ships.

They didn't know what happened in the past twelve years, since the distance to their empire has become too far to reach any relay stations. The colonize-and-return mission suddenly turned into a possible war against a strong race. So, what happened at home?

Subspace Crusher weapon
Biocide class battlecarrier, being destroyed by Subspace Crusher

The Mypekan greatly improved their technical knowledge and their scientist knew about the coherence of space and time. This lead to some smaller inventions, but also to two really big ones. The first development was the Subspace Crusher weapon. This weapon really does what its name says. By emitting highly powered tachyon beams, the subspace barrier is being broken. After that, a bit of Deuterium-plasma is ejected into this anomaly, causing subspace to react with realspace. This causes a highly energetic reaction after which the space-time-continuum does no exist any more at that place, which means all objects on this point are being destroyed - they simply don't exist anymore. Although realspace recovers after a short while, subspace will be disturbed for a long time.

Besides weapons, a new transporting device was developed. Our scientists call it "Jumpgate". The way it works is similar to the way the Subspace Crusher works. By emitting low frequency tachyon beams and thus opening the subspace barrier, the ship that wants to be transported enters subspace and emitts an ion pulse, causing the ship to be pushed in the opposite direction of the ion pulse. By calculating the needed power of the ion pulse, one can calculate the exit point of the jump with an accuracy of about 15 LY. There is one big disadvantage about the Jumpgates - they need big amounts of Deuterium-Transmolybden for keeping them stable. Deuterium-Transmolybden is created when Duranium and Molybdenum react under high pressure with Samariumdisulfid. While Samariumdisulfid is cheap in productiong, Molybdenum and Duranium can not be replicated. On the long run, the Jumpgates are just as expensive as they can be useful.

[PROBE - 20-Apr-98]
Subdrive powered probe
Along with these, a device called "Subdrive" was developed. This one really was a big breakthrough in space travelling. It was a very fast and cheap way of flying large distances in a short time. The way it works is a couriosity of the five-dimensional universe. Within the first three dimensions (height, width, depth) there are different levels of them, which you can imagine with three concentric spheres, one infinite small one, a bigger one, and an infintely big one. These levels are called subspace, realspace and hyperspace. Realspace is the level we actually live in. Hyperspace, as well as subspace, aren't inhabited since they are infinitely large or, as subspace, infinitely small. Not to mention that they are completely empty of any matter. However, their energetic potential is extremely high. There have already been devices to put matter, or actually ships, into hyperspace. This is not very hard since hyperspace does not have any barriers to realspace. But hyperspace is infinitely large, and thus its energetic potential is scattered widely, and so it has only been used for travelling.
Subspace, on the other hand, has a barrier to realspace, is infinitely small and has all its energetic potential compressed heavily. While it isn't hard to break the subspace barrier, the real problem is to get a ship into a singularity. The Mypekan scientists used a method that is somewhat similar to the way the Jumpgates work. Jumpgates are constant entries into subspace which overload subspace with energy, causing it to inflate and deflate again in less than nanoseconds. Ships fly in when subspace inflates and deflate with it. Same goes for subdrives, only that they open subspace, let it inflate, and catch energy out of it before it deflates.
